The Republic of El Salvador is a constitutional democracy with a representative multi-party system, governed by a president and an 84-member unicameral Legislative Assembly. The President, is elected by an absolute majority. The Presidency is acting both as the Head of State as well as the Head of Government.
Mr. Nayib Bukele, the current President, was elected in February 2019 by promising to fight relentlessly against crime and political corruption. Being one of the youngest leaders in the world, he is celebrated for his international promotion of El Salvador’s business and investment environment and progressive economic reforms, including the adoption of Bitcoin as official currency alongside the US dollar.
The current vice Presidency is held by Felix Augusto Antonio Ulloa Garay, a lawyer by profession and well know for his outstanding academic career and defense for democracy.
1. The Republic of El Salvador is divided into 14 territorial subdivisions (departments): Ahuachapán, Cabañas, Chalatenango, Cuscatlán, La Libertad, La Paz, La Unión, Morazán, San Miguel, San Salvador, San Vicente, Santa Ana, Sonsonate and Usulután.
2. San Salvador is the oldest city of Central America, founded on June 18th 1524.
3. The national holiday is on September 15th and commemorates independence from Spain in 1821.
4. Pupusa is the national dish, a type of flatbread made of cornmeal or rice, served with various side dishes.
5. Turtle eggs are considered a delicacy in some restaurants.
